Deputy Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator

The Town of Bethlehem Department of Public Works is seeking Deputy Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator candidates to work at the Town’s water treatment facilities.  Primary duties include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

  • Acts on behalf of the Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator;
  • Supervises the daily operations of the water plants to assure efficient and economical use of equipment, supplies, and manpower;
  • Makes daily inspection of the plants and machinery and equipment, directing necessary repairs and maintenance, and the cleaning and washing of filters;
  • Conducts or supervises necessary tests for control of plant operation;
  • Issues instructions for the regulation of chlorinators and chemical feeders;
  • Supervises and instructs operators, trainees and other subordinate employees;
  • Conducts special studies for improvement of water quality and plant operations;
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, chemicals and equipment;
  • Maintains records and prepares periodic reports on the operation of the plant.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

A.  Either:

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS Registered four (4) year College with a Bachelor of Science Degree; or
  • Eligibility for a Professional Engineer’s License issued by the State of New York and possession at the time of appointment; or
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered two (2) year College with and Associate Degree in Applied Science and four (4) years of satisfactory experience in the actual operation of a water treatment plant with facilities for filtration with pretreatment, chemical softening, or any similar process; or
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and 10 years of approved experience described in (3) above.

AND,

B.  Satisfactory completion of an appropriate course of instruction approved by the New York State Department of Health; AND
C.  At least one year of satisfactory experience in the actual operation of a water treatment plant with facilities for filtration with pretreatment, chemical softening, or any similar process.

Special Requirement for Acceptance of Applications:  Possession of a Type 1-A certificate issued under provisions of the NYS Sanitary Code.
