Given a lot of recent focus on brush and leaf pickup, I thought it would be helpful to clarify our town policies surrounding brush, leaf and yard waste pickup.
Yard Waste Removal - The Highway Department prioritizes yard waste removal every single day of the year (except for weekends). Five days per week, Highway Crews pick up yard waste. This is a top priority of mine and my crews and there will never be a termination of this important service. It is too important to the town’s residents.
In the fall, Highway Crews provide Fall Loose Leaf Curbside Pickup and collection. This service begins every October (as soon as the leaves fall) and continues into December. Last year (in 2020), the Highway Department purchased two new leaf vacuum units that streamlined the process of leaf collection. This was a big help to the process of leaf collection because these new units allowed for greater efficiency (2 employees versus the usual 3 employees) of the Crews. This also helped a lot during the COVID restrictions that have reduced our staff. The Highway Department will continue loose leaf pickup – this service will not be cancelled or restricted.
Spring Cleanup is a Highway Department service that occurs every year, during the month of April. During the month of April, we are asking town residents to use barrels or yard waste bags for their yard waste. This will help streamline this task and enable the Highway Crews to move efficiently through town to get this job done. This year, it is even more important than ever to use the barrels and bags for yard waste because the Highway Department is still operating under limited crews, due to CDC restrictions related to COVID. Prior to the pandemic, the Highway Department was able to use Job Corps seasonal employees that would allow the Crews with 3 workers (2 of the crew members would be town highway employees and the third would be a seasonal worker from Job Corps). This process enabled the Highway Department to access additional seasonal workers to help on town pickup efforts.
Job Corp disallowed seasonal workers in 2020 (because of the pandemic). This reduction in force, combined with CDC guidelines imposed on our work means that the Highway Department now only utilizes 2 workers per truck. This ensures safety for the Highway Department staff, which is imperative during COVID19.
Our overall goal is always service to community and safety for our Highway Crews. We will not stop until the yard waste, brush and leaves are removed from resident’s curbs. I am also always available to hear directly from residents and can be reached at 518-439-4955 ext. 1501. In the meantime, please help us to get the work done by placing the yard waste in the month of April in barrels or in yard waste bags – your help in doing this will ensure that our limitations due to COVID19 will ensure greater efficiency for the Highway Crews.
