Help Wanted - 3 positions: DPW Utility Service Helper, Highway Equipment Operator I, Highway Laborer

The Town of Bethlehem, NY is currently seeking candidates for the following positions:  DPW Field Operations - Utility Service Helper, Highway Department Equipment Operator I and Highway Department Laborer.


DPW Field Operations – Utility Service Helper

The Town of Bethlehem, NY-Department of Public Works is seeking candidates to work as a Utility Service Helper in our Field Operations Division.  Experience in water distribution and sewer collection systems desired.

Requirements include a valid NYS driver’s license, and must obtain and maintain a NYS Class B Commercial Driver’s License during employment. Must be available for weekend and night emergency responses.

Benefits include paid vacation, holidays, sick time, full medical and dental insurance, and New York State Retirement Program.

Laborer – Highway Department

The Town of Bethlehem is seeking an entry-level candidate to work in the Town’s Highway Department.  Primary duties include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Perform a wide variety of manual tasks related to highway construction and maintenance including but not limited to:  resurfacing and reconstructing roads, patching, hauling stone, milling assistance, etc.
  • Cut brush and mow along roadways.  Collect road debris such as branches and leaves from roadsides.
  • Assist snowplow and truck operators by performing duties of a wingperson.
  • Perform duties of transfer station or compost facility attendant.
  • Act as a flagperson on a worksite, directing traffic safely through the work zone.
  • Perform cleaning and maintenance duties at Town facilities.
  • Clear streams and remove debris from drainage pipes, ditches, etc.  Repair and maintain catch basins and drainage facilities.
  • Wash and clean trucks and equipment.
  • Perform grounds maintenance work such as landscaping, mowing and trimming lawns, lawn repair, chipping brush with chipper, trimming trees with chain saw, and removing trees.
  • Plow, shovel and clear snow and ice from crosswalks, culverts, parking lots and driveways at the Towns properties.
  • Pick up yard waste and brush.
  • Perform leaf pickup with vacuum-type collection machine.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors which may include trash removal, sidewalk sweeping, herbicide dunks, erecting snow fences, operating small machinery, maintenance of signs, etc.

Equipment Operator I-Highway Department

The Town of Bethlehem is seeking candidates for an Equipment Operator I in our Highway Department.  Primary duties include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Operates dump truck hauling sand, gravel, cement, stone, dirt, and other materials on highway construction projects;
  • Operates truck in spreading sand or salt on icy roads; hauling snow to a dumping point; plows snow with a blade attached to a truck;
  • May perform traffic control and flagging duties when required;
  • Performs manual task on highway construction and maintenance work;
  • Hauls material from storage yard, to various locations where street repair crews are working and may be required to help load and unload truck;
  • Operates truck collecting yard debris;
  • Drives power tractor with grass mowing attachments on the shoulder of roads and in parks;
  • Seasonal activities may include the assignment to building construction projects;
  • Washes, lubricates and services truck with water, gas, and oil, and makes minor repairs.

Candidates shall have a minimum of one (1) year of experience operating a truck requiring a Class B license to operate and must possess a valid NYS Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
