NYS Department of Tax and Finance just announced the deadline for property owners to voluntarily switch from the STAR Exemption to the STAR Credit Check is June 17th for 2019. If you switch by that date you will receive a check from NYSDTF in September of 2019. If you switch after that date it will be considered for 2020. Go to www.tax.ny.gov or call (518) 457-2036 if you would like to switch or would like more information.
To switch to the STAR credit from the exemption, property owners no longer need to renounce their exemption using Form RP-496.
NYS Department of Tax and Finance has now added new options to the beginning of the STAR credit registration online application, www.tax.ny.gov . Homeowners are now guided to choose from three options:

If you want to switch from the STAR exemption to the STAR credit, there are two steps you need to take: 1) follow the instructions for STAR exemption removal and renunciation and 2) register with NYS Tax & Finance for the STAR credit. You can register by visiting www.tax.ny.gov or calling 518-457-2036.
Please note that the renunciation of a STAR exemption is irrevocable. This includes property owners who renounce their STAR exemption to switch to the credit; they CANNOT switch back to the exemption at a later time.
