Help Wanted - Assistant Building Inspector, reply by 10/1

The Town of Bethlehem Building Department is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Building Inspector.  Primary duties include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Reviews, checks and approves plans and specifications submitted with building permits;
  • Inspects buildings and structures in the process of construction, or repair, for compliance with approved plans and specifications and all requirements of applicable ordinances and laws;
  • Inspects existing buildings to note conditions affecting health and safety;
  • Inspects the general construction of a building and such specific factors as adequacy of size and rooms, light and air, sanitary and heating facilities, fire escapes and other emergency exits;
  • Issues building permits and furnishes the prescribed certificates of occupancy upon application;
  • Explains the requirements of the local building and housing codes and applicable laws to building contractors, property owners, and the general public;
  • Investigates complaints dealing with the building and housing codes and zoning ordinance, prepares reports of inspections made and violations found and assists in prosecuting violations;
  • Helps in the preparation of reports relating to inspection duties;
  • Performs routine Fire and Safety inspections on commercial buildings and multiple dwellings;
  • Inspects development sites for compliance with Planning Board site plan and subdivision approvals.

Minimum Experience and Training: (Either)

  1. Graduation from high school and three (3) years of experience in the building construction field; OR
  2. Graduation from an approved two year college with at least an Associate’s Degree with a major in mechanical or construction technology, or related program, and one year of the above experience.
