Kenwood Avenue Traffic Calming Study

Project Details

Kenwood Avenue is a collector road, with homes, small-scale commercial businesses, farmlands, and community uses such as schools, religious places, and ballfields.  The general perception is that the speeds and volumes along Kenwood Avenue are out of character with the mostly residential area it serves.  This project includes the evaluation of potential traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures between Delaware Avenue (NYS Rt. 443) and the Delmar Bypass (NYS Rt. 32).  The project goal is to identify potential safety improvements to benefit all users of the Kenwood Avenue Corridor.  This study evaluated the extent of the concerns, feasibility, and appropriateness of various measures to address documented issues.

Project Objectives:

  1. Understand community safety concerns and experiences.
  2. Evaluate feasibility and/or appropriateness of various traffic calming and/or pedestrian safety measures to address documented issues.
  3. Develop a traffic calming and pedestrian safety recommendation report for potential future funding/project opportunities.

Public Involvement

In the Spring of 2023, the Town of Bethlehem began work on a study to evaluate potential traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures for the Kenwood Avenue corridor between Delaware Avenue and the Delmar Bypass.  A [Public Participation Plan Link] was developed at the outset of the project.  Two Public Meetings were held to share information with residents and to obtain public input.  The project team also developed an interactive mapping platform to provide an option for residents and stakeholders to participate online.
